Lewis H. Glaser, a
California entrepreneur, founded a plastics molding firm called
Precision Specialties in Hollywood during 1943.[a] The company
made a variety of products contracted for different
companies.[1] One of the first toy related products were HO
scale (1:87) train sets, including locomotives, and a variety of
cars along with buildings. The building line was extensive,
including a farm group, a suburban passenger station, and a
variety of utility structures. Many of these originals were
later reproduced in other scales.
....
About 1950, Revell reproduced Maxwell and Ford Model T assembled
toys originally designed by the Gowland Brothers in
England, a
company producing toys since 1932.[3] According to noted
collector Cecil Gibson,[4] these did not sell so well in
England, but Revell had much better luck with the series in the
U.S. The Revell box said, "By John Gowland—creator of Champ and
Chu Chu".[5]

Lewis H. Glaser, geboren
1917 in New York, arbeitete seit 1934 in einem
Radio-Reparaturladen in Los Angeles im US-Bundesstaat
Kalifornien und übernahm das Geschäft 1938 für 100 $ vom
Vorbesitzer. 1941 kaufte Glaser Werkzeuge zur
Kunststoffverarbeitung und begann unter dem Namen „Precision
Specialities“ verschiedenste Kunststoffprodukte anzubieten. 1942
Zustand, also als Bausatz, anzubieten.

Plastikpodukten. Revell, dessen Name sich aus dem Französischen
“reveil – Erwachen” ableitet, produzierte zunächst
Kunststoff-Spielzeug, Puppenstuben-Zubehör und
Spielzeug-Waschmaschinen, bis Lewis H. Glaser 1947 die Idee hat,
maßstabsgetreue Autos aus verschiedenen Kunststoffteilen
herzustellen.

What we know today as
Revell began in 1945, when a company called Precision
Specialties,
founded by Lou Glasser, manufactured injection-model plastic
kits for various companies. One
of those companies, Gowland & Gowland, used Glasser’s models to
create a pull-toy replica of
the “Maxwell” vintage jalopy popularized on Jack Benny’s radio
and television shows. The
Maxwell toy was a major hit, encouraging Gowland & Gowland to
create a series of miniature
Highway Pioneers, 69-cent model kits of vintage automobiles like
the 1900 Packard, the 1911
Rolls-Royce, and the 1914 Stutz Bearcat. The kits drove off F.W.
Woolworth store shelves. By
then, Glasser concentrated exclusively on the plastic model kit
toy market. Adapting the French
word for “new beginning,” reveille, Glasser named his plastic
modeling company Revell. |

At the end of the Second
World War, Glaser bought a plastics company and then launched
Precision Specialities, a company that was to make plastic
novelties. In 1946, Glaser started producing toys, firstly
marketing a Minnie Mouse Washing Machine that was to prove a
huge success and later on he followed this with a plastic
Maxwell Automobile pull along toy. After attending a toy fair in
1950, Glaser found himself inundated with new orders. Someone
suggested he make a model kit version to help the company keep
up with orders as, even if the company produced ten thousand of
the Maxwell models per day, they would still be short. However,
Glaser ignored this suggestion. |
